Is it worth importing a car?

It depends on the car. In many cases importing clearly pays off; in others the difference is small. See when it's really worth it and how to avoid surprises.

When it pays off most

Upper-mid and premium range (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche): the European supply is huge and starting prices are lower, so the saving is bigger even with ISV and transport.

Electric cars: exempt from ISV in Portugal and with plenty of supply in France and the Netherlands — the maths is usually very favourable.

When it pays off less

Very cheap, older city cars, where transport weighs more heavily as a proportion of the price, or models whose supply in Portugal is already abundant and competitive.

Risks to avoid
