How much does it cost to import a car to Portugal?

Importing a car from the European Union involves more than the listing price. See, step by step, all the real costs in 2026 and how to work out the final turnkey figure.

1. The car price at origin

This is the starting point. In markets like Germany, used-car prices are frequently 15–25% below Portugal for the same model, year and mileage — especially in the upper-mid and premium range.

2. Transport to Portugal

The cost depends on the distance and type of transport (car-carrier truck or driving). As a reference, it's around €500–900 from Central Europe; from Spain it's cheaper thanks to proximity. It includes insurance during transport.

3. ISV (Vehicle Tax)

Paid once at registration. It's calculated from displacement and CO₂ emissions (WLTP table), with a reduction for years of use. Fully electric cars are exempt and eligible plug-in hybrids pay only 25%.
